On Honshu, the main island of Japan, cherry blossoms are blooming, but here in Japan’s far north, the air is still cold, so we can’t see flowers yet. However, I can clearly feel spring is coming. Ice in the sea and rivers is beginning to break up. The snow in the fields is melting, and the ground is beginning to show. Tree buds are starting to grow, and birds are singing happily. We can’t wait for spring!

When there is a lot of snow, it is hard to shovel it, and driving in a blizzard can even be deadly. Winter life is hard, but it also brings blessings. Walking along the shore on a cold day after a snowfall you can see a mystical sight. The snow and ice create artistic patterns by the action of the sea wind and waves. They are creations of nature that can only be seen at this time of year.
